An emergency appeal from our Chief Executive, Keith Best

Target: £ 100,000

So far, we have raised £144,000, 144 % of our total. We have exceeded our target. Thank you!

Please note that the thermometer is updated regularly, but not in real-time.

Our online appeal has now closed. Thank you for the incredible support that has been shown. You may still wish to donate however these donations won't be added to our thermometer. Including donations made offline, we have now reached over £144,000, which is a fantastic sum. Donations are still coming in by phone and by post and so decisions will be being made over the coming weeks. Thank you so much for your support.

The thermometer has now been updated to reflect all donations made, both on and offline.

I feel extremely privileged to work for Freedom from Torture (formerly the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture) and I am so proud of everything we've been able to achieve thanks to our supporters. The generosity of people like you has enabled us to provide a sanctuary where survivors of torture can find the specialist care and support they need so they can start to look to their futures with hope.

But now our vital services are under serious threat.

We are facing an unprecedented financial crisis and we urgently need your support. High demand for our services is putting a huge strain on our already stretched budgets. Without emergency funds we will only be able to continue our work at its current level for another month.

If we cannot raise additional funds by 31st May 2012 we will have no choice but to implement severe cost-reducing measures. These will inevitably result in cuts to desperately needed services.

The vast majority of our expenditure goes towards ensuring the protection and rehabilitation of survivors of torture. We are doing everything we can to reduce our spending on activities outside of our core work; however without increased funding we will no longer be able to protect vital clinical services from significant cuts.

Without additional support we will be forced to turn away survivors of torture who desperately need our specialist help. This will become a painful reality if we cannot raise additional funding within the next few weeks.

Demand for our services outstrips our capacity to provide them, and we already have lengthy waiting lists.

Without further help from our supporters this situation will get substantially worse. Time is running out. We need your support now, before it is too late.

Please make a donation today.

£48 could pay for two hours of counselling but if you can afford to give more please do so. Your donation will help us safeguard our services for survivors of torture.

Every pound that we can raise by 31/05/12 will help, so please don't think that your donation cannot make a difference. It can, and will.

Yours sincerely,

Keith Best
