To mark Independent Booksellers Week 2012 (30 June - 6 July), Julian Barnes has released 'A Life with Books' (£1.99) - a pamphlet published by Jonathan Cape. The title is available exclusively in independent bookshops and all proceeds from the sales of the pamphlet go towards our work with torture survivors.

Julian Barnes is a Freedom from Torture patron and long-time supporter. Last year, Julian spoke about his Man Booker prize-winning novel 'The Sense of an Ending' and raised over £5,000 for Freedom from Torture. Many thanks to Julian and our friends at Jonathan Cape (and Random House Group) for their continued support.

Read, follow, take part

Read an extract from the title: 'It was through books that I first realised there were other worlds beyond my own; first imagined what it might be like to be another person; first encountered that deeply intimate bond made when a writer's voice gets inside a reader's head,' writes Julian Barnes in a reflection on his love of books in the Guardian.
