The North East Centre receives valuable funding from Northern Rock Foundation.
In 2010, 130 clients from 30 different countries were referred to Freedom from Torture's North East centre in Newcastle. Staff and volunteers work across the whole region, in partnership with other agencies, to make sure there are the right quality services for survivors of torture wherever they live, however complex their needs.
The following services are provided at the Freedom from Torture North East in Newcastle:
- Counselling services
- Medico-Legal Report (MLR) writing service
- Supervision, support and training of North East colleagues working with survivors of torture
- Working in partnership with Newcastle and North Tyneside NHS Primary Care Trust, the North East centre is developing a model of good practice for working with survivors of torture in primary care
Freedom from Torture North East covers the following areas: Cleveland, County Durham, Cumbria (Carlisle), Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, including: Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middleborough, Newcastle Upon Tyne, North Shields, Redcar, South Shields, Stockton on Tees, Sunderland and Wallsend.
