Engaging with Survivors of Torture - what you need to know

A one-day introductory course for people working with asylum seekers, refugees and survivors of torture.

This participatory training programme encourages engagement and input from all participants.  We work together toward the aim and learning objectives below through large and small group discussion, case studies and experiential activities.

Overall aim:

To support participants in engaging with survivors of torture in their professional roles

Learning objectives:

By the end of the training programme, participants will be able to:

  • Explain what torture is and the impact it has on survivors
  • Describe techniques for creating a safe relationship with survivors and building trust
  • Talk about torture with clients / patients with increased confidence
  • Explain what you can do in your own role to support survivors of torture
  • Recognise the potential impact that working with survivors of torture may have on you
