Freedom from Torture - Don't disappear

Don't disappear

A new change to the law means that charities like us are seeking your formal permission to ensure we can continue to contact you. It's called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and it means that we may not be able to contact you unless you confirm you are still happy to hear from us.

So please don't disappear. Take a moment to complete our simple contact form.

Blog by Hannah Ward,

As the Head of Communications and Campaigns at Freedom from Torture, I fully support this change to the law. I think it's great that we can all choose who we want to hear from, and I hope you'll respond today because I know our cause is important to you. We are a small organisation working solely to help torture survivors in the UK, so every single supporter matters to us.

With incredible people like you by our side, together we can expose the truth that people are still being tortured around the world. Together we can help those who have been taken from their families - and burnt, beaten and raped in secret. Together we can welcome torture survivors and make sure that their voices are heard.

Please don't disappear. Stand together with torture survivors and show your solidarity today.

Please take a moment to complete the form to make sure you continue hearing from us. You can give us your permission online at This is one of the most important things you can do for survivors of torture here in the UK. Survivors like Nuri from Sudan whose heartrending words you can read below. Nuri says:

'I used to scream in the night when the memories came back. Freedom from Torture has been absolutely essential for me. Coming here was the start of my recovery.' - Nuri, Freedom from Torture client

Nuri will never forget the first time he came to our centre. It was the first time he felt able to tell anybody about the cruelty he had suffered. Just take a look at all of the other good things we were able to do thanks to the amazing support we received from people like you last year.

  • Supporters like you were here for nearly 1,000 people from more than 50 countries around the world, who sought our help to overcome torture in 2017.
  • Supporters like you helped provide over 17,000 therapy sessions annually for people who have escaped their torturers, but are still living with the mental torture of their abuse.
  • Supporters like you helped deliver a petition of over 40,000 signatures to the Home Office in 2017. The petition called for better treatment of medical evidence in torture survivors’ asylum cases.

And this was just in the last year! Over the past 32 years, amazing supporters like you helped thousands of torture survivors to rebuild their lives.

So please don't disappear. Please fill out this form today to make sure that we know you want to hear from us.

With my warmest wishes and sincere thanks for your support towards torture survivors.

Yours sincerely,

Hannah Ward
