Poetry Anthology Launch with Philip Pullman
On a pleasant late autumn day in November Freedom from Torture travelled to Blackwell's bookshop in Oxford to attend the launch of a poetry anthology organised by the our Oxford Supporters' Group and with special guest author Philip Pullman.
The Foreword of the anthology, Hands and Wings: Poems for Freedom from Torture, has been written by Philip – author of the world famous His Dark Materials trilogy, and a supporter of Freedom from Torture for many years.
The launch in Blackwell's Norrington Room was packed out with an audience spanning all ages and composed of poetry fans and - not surprisingly - a number of Philip Pullman fans as well.
The latter were not disappointed because Philip introduced the four poets who were to read from the anthology with a wonderfully concise and humorous opinion piece on what poetry was and wasn't. He concluded with a denunciation of torture and an endorsement of "a wonderful charity", Freedom from Torture.
The poets (Wendy Klein, Kate Venables, Ian House and Hylda Sims) read with composed passion and to a rapt audience. They concluded by reading together David Attwooll's Freedom from Torture, inspired by our therapeutic Bread Group. David wrote this poem especially for Freedom from Torture and has donated it to us.
The anthology was the brainchild of Dorothy Yamamoto who compiled the poems and edited the book. More than 50 poets have donated their poems to the anthology and all proceeds will go to Freedom from Torture. We are very grateful to everyone involved and to Blackwell's bookshop for their support.
