Freedom from Torture gives evidence to asylum accommodation inquiry
Freedom from Torture CEO Susan Munroe today gave oral evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee inquiry into asylum accommodation
Freedom from Torture provided evidence collected on asylum accommodation standards and operations over the past three years. Torture survivors regularly tell us about poor treatment they receive from housing staff, including harassment, invasion of privacy, and a failure to respond to complaints or to deal with outstanding repairs. This poor treatment has clinical consequences, including adding to survivors’ trauma and hampering the work we do to help them recover.
Freedom from Torture also urged the Government to establish an independent inspector to monitor the quality of housing and the treatment of people living in asylum accommodation.
