Experts by Experience (EBE) is a group of torture survivors from the North West of England who deliver training, raise awareness, and organise meetings at the Centre in Manchester (FFTNW) for clients to give them support and advice and a stronger voice at FFTNW.
They also engage in some outreach work including through the Survivors Speak OUT (SSO) network of which some are members.
The group, all former clients of Freedom from Torture, is made up of torture survivors who have fled persecution and sought protection in the UK.
Two Experts by Experience members sit on the centre's Advisory Group that is made up of regional stakeholders from the sector
They speak at a number of our fundraising events to supporters and the public.
They help to deliver training alongside our Training Officer within our Capacity Building programme to a number of organisations including NHS Primary and Secondary Care Trusts, GPs, lawyers, and other Refugee organisations.
They coordinate a quarterly “Client Surgery” in which clients can drop-in and speak to them about concerns or problems they are having, not related to their therapy. This might range from housing to interpreters to reporting.
EBE members also organise and facilitate quarterly client meetings so that can survivors attending Freedom from Torture can have their voice heard or request a presentation about a particular issue.
EBE members sit on every recruitment panel at FFTNW and are involved in the training of new and existing staff and volunteers
They engage in a number of talks throughout the year across the North West. Many members of EBE are also part of our Survivors Speak OUT (SSO) network.
