Write to Life - 20 Pieces for 20 Years

20 Pieces for 20 Years - A celebration of Write to Life and Refugee Week

By a happy coincidence, the twenty years of Refugee Week coincide with the life story of Write to Life, the creative writing and performance at group at Freedom from Torture. The group was set up over 20 years ago and began as a small group of four or five clients, writing for themselves with no outlet to be read, seen or heard by the public.

Since then, Write to Life members, supported by Freedom from Torture, have launched themselves into the world, first via annual anthologies which have been distributed at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, and since then via other literary channels, live performances, theatre, film and now music. The group continues to flourish and blossom in new directions and it is now recognised as a powerful form of survivor activism.

To celebrate, we have gathered 20 pieces of writing by 20 of our writers to showcase the life story of Write to Life and the power of writing in the face of adversity.

All accompanying art for Write to Life’s 20 pieces for Refugee Week is by members of the Open Art Studio group at Freedom from Torture.
