Rex Bloomstein, founding member of Freedom from Torture - 40th anniversary

"The fight against torture has to go on"

Rex began working with Amnesty as a documentary filmmaker and through his work and shared beliefs, became a founding member of Freedom from Torture. 40 years on, he believes the support and work of the organisation and the condemnation of torture has never been more important.

Freedom from Torture is a beacon of light as a human rights organisation, practically helping survivors of torture in all sorts of ways. They have developed techniques to help survivors address the torture they have suffered, empowering them to live life again.

Freedom from Torture is also a reminder that the practice of torture still exists in the world and that we mustn’t forget it.

The ban against torture is recognised by the United Nations. It’s one of the fundamental human rights. And we, in the UK, must never deviate from that.

Please keep going, keep supporting us.

Because this is a wonderful example of human beings helping other human beings who they don’t know. People who have come to this country, who want to contribute, who want to make a life, and have suffered the most terrible things. They need support and help, and they will contribute to our society, and they do.”
