Legacy gifts make up more than 25% of our annual income and make a huge contribution to our ability to provide our life-changing services. Leaving a gift in your Will is a great way to uphold the values you cherish and help Freedom from Torture to:

  • Offer rehabilitation and therapy services that help survivors of torture to rebuild their lives.
  • Provide legal and welfare advice to survivors in the UK and make sure they are not returned to their countries of origin where they risk further torture.
  • Campaign against torture, working together with survivors to hold torturing states to account.

How to leave a gift to Freedom from Torture in your Will

Writing or updating your Will might seem daunting, but it can be a very straightforward process and give you peace of mind.

Step 1: Write your Will – speak to a Will-writing provider to make sure your final wishes and your loved ones are well looked after. You can also write your Will for free with our partner, Farewill.

Step 2: Get in touch with us – we would love to keep you informed of the work you make possible and say thank you. We would also love to answer any questions you have about leaving a gift in your Will to Freedom from Torture.

FAQs

Can I have my Will drafted for free?

If you are aged 55 or older, our membership of the National Free Wills Network can help you –– to get a free Will drafted or updated free of charge. The service co-ordinator will give you details of solicitors in your area who are part of the scheme. You then receive a voucher to present to the solicitor when you make your appointment. Can I update my Will or add a codicil?

If you already have a Will but wish to include a gift to Freedom from Torture you can do so easily by adding a Codicil. Your solicitor can organise this to ensure the new instructions align with your existing Will.

Do you recommend specific wording?

Your solicitor can also advise you on suitable wording to include a gift to Freedom from Torture in your Will. Our suggested wording is: 

‘I give free of inheritance tax to Freedom from Torture, registered Charity Number 1000340, of 111 Isledon Road, London N7 7JW [insert the details of your gift here, e.g. 10% of the residue of my estate, a specific sum, or a specific item] to be used for the charitable purpose of supporting its area of greatest need. I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer at Freedom from Torture shall be a full and sufficient discharge for my Executors.’

Do I need to notify you about my gift?

Although you don’t have to tell us about your legacy to Freedom from Torture, doing so gives us the opportunity to plan ahead for the future, thank you for your commitment and keep you updated on our work.
