Ann, Freedom from Torture supporter - 40th anniversary

“Torture is an abomination and is completely unjustifiable”

Ann is one of our steadfast supporters who share our compassion for survivors and our commitment to stopping torture. With her - and with you - we are so much stronger.

I became a supporter 18 years ago as a result of a BBC Radio 4 Appeal featuring John McCarthy. It really inspired me, so I found a local support group and joined.

I was so impressed with how such a small group could work together to help raise funds and awareness of Freedom from Torture’s work. When the chair of the group stepped down after six years, I agreed to take on the role. That was 10 years ago now!

Torture is an abomination and is completely unjustifiable. Freedom from Torture do amazing work in caring for survivors and addressing the issues they face. Over the years I’ve learned a lot about what Freedom from Torture practitioners do to help rehabilitate survivors. It’s truly inspiring.

I’m also aware of the tireless campaigning Freedom from Torture do to raise awareness of what it’s like to be a refugee and asylum seeker in the UK. Things in the UK are still horrendously difficult for torture survivors.

I’ve been privileged to attend events hosted by torture survivors and it’s been evident the impact Freedom from Torture has had on their lives. Thanks to the support they have received, these wonderful people are being able to fulfil their potential as human beings and to society.
