Our response to Foreign Secretary's statement on removal of survivors of sexual violence to Sri Lanka

Jean- Benoit Louveaux, Policy and Advocacy Manager of Freedom from Torture said:

"We welcome the Foreign Secretary's expressions of concern regarding the UK Government's removal of asylum seekers of sexual violence from Sri Lanka to face possible torture on return. This is something which Freedom from Torture doctors have previously collected evidence of and which we have raised in our own reports.

We are however concerned to learn that Nav Pillay, the UN human rights commissioner has announced her departure from the UN as she is the official responsible for the inquiry into Sri Lankan human rights violations following the UN Human Rights Council decision earlier thisyear. We hope that the Foreign Secretary will press the UN for a replacement for Nav Pillay who can conduct this inquiry as a priority."
