Rebuild families torn apart by torture
When Murat fled his country to escape torture, he had no choice but to leave behind the people he loved most – his wife and two young daughters.
Murat was tortured after joining a peaceful protest speaking out against his country’s increasingly authoritarian regime.
At the time, his children were really young, and he knew his girls needed him during their most formative years. But the police kept persecuting him and one evening, after he was arrested in front of his family, he realised he had to flee to keep them safe.
For nearly a decade, his family was torn apart. Murat’s daughters grew up without their father. He missed their earliest milestones, school years, and birthdays.
Thanks to supporters like you, Murat received therapy and legal support. After a long battle, he was granted refugee status and just over six months ago, he was finally reunited with his family. His daughters, once toddlers, are now young adults. They have a lot of catching up to do – but they’re doing it together.
