Photo Exhibition - What does Freedom mean to you?
Photographic reflections on freedom, by the winners and finalists of Freedom from Torture’s 2024 international photography competition
Millions of people are being displaced from their homes and communities, suffering fear, loss and persecution. Conflict, climate change and inequality are forcing migration. There is now an urgent need to reimagine the conversation around migration and central to this conversation is the question of freedom.
The competition invited anyone with access to a camera to show us what freedom looks like - and how the feeling of freedom might be captured in a digital photographic image that transcends borders. There are two categories for entrants over and under 18 years of age.
Entries were judged by a professional jury composed of 3 established creatives:
Kolbassia Haoussou (MBE) who serves as the head of Freedom from Torture's Survivor Empowerment Directorate; Aisha Olamide Seriki a Nigerian multimedia artist; Adrian Evans, Director, Panos Pictures photo agency. For each category, a winner will be announced at the opening of the exhibition and prize money awarded.
24 images have been selected for display, and the remaining entries are projected in a slideshow within the exhibition. The exhibition is currently being displayed simultaneously in three cities - London, Glasgow and Bath – as part of Refugee Week and the London Festival of Architecture.
Members of the public are invited to contribute to the People’s Vote, selecting your favourite photograph from the 24 prints exhibited and casting your vote in the gallery. The winner of the People’s Vote will be announced on Thursday 27 June at Velorose London, and prize money will be awarded.
