Freedom from Torture - Referring Clients for Medico-Legal Reports (MLRs)

Referring Clients for Medico-Legal Reports (MLRs)

The production of Medico-Legal Reports (MLRs) forms a core part of our clinical work. An MLR can play a crucial role in a survivor’s asylum application because they provide detailed evidence of the extent of a torture survivor’s injuries and trauma. Our team of clinical staff, expertly trained in this area, apply international standards for documenting torture in the assessments they deliver.

Referrals in the UK

Legal representatives who are representing clients living in the UK should address referrals to the Medico-Legal Report Service in London.

Please note information below for clients travelling to our Manchester Office:

Please read the guidance document below for full instructions.

Also note the Home Office has now published a new asylum policy instruction on how cases, involving medical evidence from the Medical Foundation Medico-Legal Report Service at Freedom from Torture and the Helen Bamber Foundation, should be handled. See below:

Pricing change

We have recently been informed by the Legal Aid Agency that with immediate effect the fees we charge for our medico legal reports can no longer be charged at a fixed fee.

For all future reports we will therefore be invoicing an hourly rate on a case specific basis showing a full breakdown of the costs incurred for the work we are instructed.

We will quote you for each instruction and then once the report is produced will send a final invoice which will not be greater than the amount quoted for the original instructions.

Our fee charges can be found in the 'Referral Information' document below.

Yours sincerely,
Sarah Owen
National Director of Clinical Services
