Welfare appeal: We need your help
Torture survivors struggling to make ends meet
We urgently need your help to support survivors who are struggling to make ends meet.
Many have no choice but to try and live on just £49.18 a week – the amount currently provided by the government’s inadequate asylum allowance. With £7 a day being barely enough to cover essentials, like food and toiletries, many of our clients are left vulnerable and need support.
Ali's story
Ali and his family fled Iraq, seeking safety in the UK, only to face new challenges and insecurities. Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, we were able to provide Ali with the urgent support he needed when he had nowhere else to turn.
Our vital welfare service meant we were able to refer Ali to a housing solicitor, who ensured the local council housed them appropriately. Today, Ali and his family are settled in a safe and secure home secure two-bedroom flat, and they are beginning to heal from their traumatic experiences.

A message from Ali
Ali has written a letter expressing his gratitude for the support he received from people like you and other donors of Freedom from Torture. He wanted us to pass it on to you:
Why your support matters
Torture survivors often arrive in the UK with nothing, facing immense challenges as they try to rebuild their lives. Your donation can help provide:
- Urgent welfare support: Ensuring survivors have enough food, essential sanitary items, and the means to travel to vital appointments.
- Safe housing: Preventing homelessness by providing temporary stays in hotels or B&Bs in moments of crisis.
- Therapeutic services: Offering the care and support survivors need to heal from their traumatic experiences.
With the cost-of-living crisis putting increasing pressure on people up and down the UK, your generosity will help survivors of torture feel safe and supported. Together, we can show that we stand for care and compassion – and that we want to help torture survivors rebuild their lives.
