Covid-19 has made life extremely difficult for torture survivors. However, there have been some wonderful and surprisingly positive changes that have emerged: Debra Gordon, a therapist from our Midlands Centre, tells how being restricted to telephone therapy during lockdown allowed one Congolese survivor to finally open up and talk about the long buried horrific secrets that she had felt too ashamed to reveal in face-to-face sessions.
There is another side to Covid – she could just be herself on the phone speaking from the heart and expressing the inexpressible. She has really moved on from those childhood traumas and I am very proud of that work.
You can provide essential over-the-phone and online therapy, financial relief, and legal and welfare advice to survivors as they grapple with their trauma and the challenges of being an asylum seeker or refugee in the UK, all exacerbated by this crisis.
