PM must ensure U.K. role in torture of CIA detainees is independently investigated

Following the Prime Minister's latest comments, Susan Munroe, Freedom from Torture's Chief Executive, says he should ensure the part of the U.K. in the revelations uncovered by the CIA torture report is independently investigated.

"Like the U.S. the U.K. has agreed to the principle of accountability for torture under international law.

Now that the Prime Minister has revealed that the U.K. requested redactions to the Senate Intelligence Committee report on the grounds of national security he cannot leave the world hanging on for answers any longer about the role of the UK in the extraordinary rendition and torture of CIA detainees.

It is urgent that the Prime Minister announces the independent judge-led inquiry into this issue that he promised when he came to power in 2010. To date, the Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee has failed to provide answers to questions that the Senate Intelligence Committee report raises about the U.K.

This is not good enough: the people of the U.K. like those of the U.S. deserve answers about the actions of their national security agencies in relation to the hideous acts of torture that the U.S admits have taken place."
