Statement by Freedom from Torture on EU Referendum result and refugees

Following the EU Referendum result today, Freedom from Torture is one of a number of charities calling for the UK to uphold the principle of refugee protection.

Susan Munroe, Chief Executive, Freedom from Torture, said:

“The Referendum campaign has been an upsetting time for survivors of torture who use our services – almost all of whom are asylum seekers and refugees.

“The antagonistic tone of the debate on migration has been experienced by them as an atmosphere of hostility at a time when they are trying to recover from trauma and integrate into local communities.

“There is an urgent need for political leaders across the spectrum to publicly commit to keeping hold of Britain's proud tradition of offering sanctuary to those fleeing torture and other forms of persecution, and to reaffirm the consensus, evident at the last general election, in support of the principle of international protection.

“This is a moment to give fresh meaning to long-standing British values of compassion and tolerance.”
